Huile sur toile - Cancale 1856

BISQUINES

If there is a legendary ship in the Bay of Cancale, it is the bisquine. This boat, whose origins could be Basque, reached its peak and its most beautiful lines between Brittany and Normandy, in the bay of Mont Saint-Michel, landing at Granville.

OSTREICULTURE

Cancale is, first of all, the flat oyster, which gave the city its letters of nobility. It has been fished for centuries for all markets in France and Paris. One of the very first restaurants there was named “Le Rocher de Cancale” at the end of the 18th century. Perfected at the end of the 19th century, ostreiculture has continued to reinvent itself.

PORT DE LA HOULE

First of all, a simple stranding area, the main activity of the port revolves around fishing. However, commercial activity continued until the 19th century. At this time the port was gradually developed, with the addition of the Epi pier (1838), then that of the Fenêtre (1870).

HOUSING

Apart from a few fairly spacious homes, the habitat is that of simple people, owning little, while working a lot.

Tightly packed against each other, the houses most often face south, whether they are those of the port or rural villages. The family most often lives in one or two rooms.
