HABITAT

Apart from a few fairly spacious homes, the habitat is that of simple people, owning little while working a lot. Tightly packed against each other, the houses most often face south, whether they are those of the port or rural villages. The family most often lives in one or two rooms.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a wardrobe, a table, a coal stove, a chest of drawers and a boucaou (closed bed) constituted the essential furniture of the home. The museum maintains a collection of everyday objects.

In a town where the majority of men navigate in harsh conditions, tragedies are frequent. The Cancalaise spends part of her life dressed in black. This does not prevent it from displaying a certain elegance on Sundays and holidays.
