PORT DE LA HOULE
Initially a simple beaching area, the port's main activity revolved around fishing. However, commercial activity continued until the 19th century. During this period, the port was gradually developed, with the addition of the Épi pier (1838), followed by the Fenêtre pier (1870). These were successively extended. Oyster dredging occupied the entire Cancalais fleet during the Caravan. In 1895, the first Cancalais shipyards in Newfoundland created a number of spin-off jobs. 45 schooners were registered in Cancale. But the great strike of 1911 drove shipowners away.
In the port of La Houle, the most densely populated district, houses were crammed together at the foot of the cliff. Each house generally housed one household per floor, with independent access to the upper level.
